JAWS MAUI 2008

Maui is a magical place where you can ride massive waves, watch beautiful sunrises and sunsets, drive the road to Hana, lay out on a golden beach, drive to the summit of Haleakala, or just simply chill and take it all in. It is heaven on earth.

Star Stuff and religion

Some basic truths. We as humans are all born as animals. We sleep, eat, reproduce, and fight. The fighting seems to be a constant problem for us as we are well into the 21st century yet we have not evolved enough to realize that war is insane. We come up with all sorts of means to justify why we fight and yet in the end all we continue to see is the awful horrors that wars and fighting can bring. We as humans try to make sense out of all the mysteries of life.....why are we here...... where did we come from.....why must we die......is there a God? As Carl Sagan once said "we are star stuff pondering our own existence." We really have no idea how to answer all of these great mysteries but yet we try....oh, how we try. We have created religions, and superstitions along with a wide array of theories and opinions that have damaged us psychologically as a human race....by the way, none of which gives us any of the answers. There are 100 billion stars in our galaxy and 100 billion galaxies in our universe.....maybe more......anyone who thinks they know what is going on is out of their mind. The people that do claim to know what is going on are really dangerous as they have wandered so far away from reality. Try to defind the mind....what is it, or how about the soul or psyche.....what are they? Define now...what is now......how long is now......it is all a great mystery. The truth is that we exist right now....and no one knows what it is....it just is. Our story as humans seems to revolve around three things. Awareness, consciousness, and energy. Again we run into problems trying to explain these things...but hey...we have to try...it seems as humans we must always try to validate our existence rather than just realizing how lucky we are to be here. I think the Greeks had it right when they came up with the word resurrection......which simply means to wake up! Until people realize that we are all one....and all come from the same unknowable source then we will continue down this path of instability and insanity. One of the lessons that most religions try to teach is that we are all the same and that we must find love and compassion within to be reborn into our higher spirit. Christianity teaches that "lost in separateness we are the dead Christ....when we resurrect or wake up we become the living Christ." It is all allegorical and is meant to assist us in becoming a better person. Where we get into trouble with religion is when we try to take things from say The Bible or The Koran and interpret them as being historical fact. Taking things literally from these texts is like believing that the cow did jump over the moon. The best analogy I can come up with for people who believe in this way is "Fairy tale religion." As they were taught to believe in Santa or The Easter Bunny as a child they were also taught to believe that their God exists up in the sky somewhere and is the one and only true way...this is a very immature way of looking at things. Carl Jung had a great way of describing things. He called it active imagination and said one way to activate the imagination is to propose to it a mythic image for contemplation and free development. Mythic images from all religions speak to very deep centers of the psyche. Where we go with this imagination is up to us and this can lead to a rewarding spiritual experience or to madness. Sadly humankind is leaning towards madness as we see with all the conflict and hatred within the world. If people could just let go and realize that again we are all the same.....human beings....then that would be a step in the right direction.

Americas Founding Fathers

I have been reading a lot of material recently on our founding fathers and all that America had to go through to actually break free from England and become a nation. It is inspiring to say the least to read about people who dedicated their lives to this great cause. I have a feeling that people like Washington, Adams, and Jefferson would not be happy with our current state of affairs. Washington warned about things like multiple political parties and becoming too involved in foreign affairs. Adams was a great man as well and encouraged civic virtue and honesty within the government. Jefferson warned about the dangers of letting big banks have too much power and control. All were visionaries and played major roles in the development of America. I think it would be wise for current day politicians to take a look at some of the writings of these great leaders and apply them where needed. The nations early success was based on truth, integrity, and high moral standards. These leaders knew from past experience that if any person or institution was given too much power then it would be abused. We see this all too often with big banks, big insurance, the fed, politicians, the military, and the list goes on and on. It is time once again for civic virtue and integrity to take hold as Adams once stated.
